Farmers are being encouraged to promote the benefits of applying to the EU Settlement Scheme to their seasonal workers before the deadline approaches.
After 31 December 2020, EU workers will need pre-settled or settled status to be able to remain in the UK longer than three months, to work, study, use the NHS, attend school, claim a state pension or rent a home.
Preparing and supporting staff in applying for pre-settled and settled status will help the industry ensure there are enough EU workers available after 31 December 2020.
It is free to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme before 30 June 2021 but workers must have started living in the UK by 31 December 2020. A toolkit is available from the Government here.
HOPS has produced a special information pack to support farmers with sharing government information about the scheme. It also reminds farmers that the decision has to be one of free-choice and an employee should not be coerced into applying to the scheme.
