While restrictions are lifting further throughout the UK, it’s important to stay vigilant and step up precautions to prevent outbreaks of Covid-19 on farms.

Ensuring social distancing, encouraging ‘fixed teams’ and providing more handwashing stations and washroom facilities are vital for containing an outbreak.

Follow these top steps to ensure you have implemented the correct measures:

  • Consider how you will ensure social distancing for when workers arrive on site. Consider staggering start times to reduce large groups congregating at the same time. You may need to modify working practices to ensure you can maintain a two-metre distance between workers. Encourage the wearing of face coverings where two-metres cannot be observed in indoor settings.
  • Hand out copies of your health and safety guidance and your risk assessment during the induction. It’s a good idea to talk through any new Covid-secure procedures you have put in place to protect people on the farm.
  • Post your health and safety documents and any other information showing the way the farm is Covid-secure on to the HOPS portal so employees can access this information before they start.
  • Increase the frequency of hand washing and surface cleaning.
  • Use back-to-back or side-to-side working (rather than face-to-face) where possible.
  • Use ‘fixed teams’ or partnering to reduce the numbers of people who are working together or have contact with each other.
  • Introduce one-way flow systems and increase hand sanitiser / hand washing facilities.
